Hi! Thank you!

1. Sleep. I’m currently really sleep deprived (for reasons unknown to me- I aim for 7-9 hours daily but spend a lot of time awake- tossing and turning- instead), so being able to get some quality sleep makes me happy.

2. My family. They can be a handful at times (and noisy and annoying), but I do love them. Which is great, because I’ll be stuck with them for at least 3 more years.

3. Autumn. I can barely wait. Autumn is the season of celebration and family traditions in my family (a lot of birthdays, saint’s days and other family get-togethers are in Autumn), and since I’m very family oriented, it’s just a great time for me overall.

4. The “vorlesungsfreie Zeit”. I get roughly 3 months of vacation from my school every Summer, and I really enjoy all the free time I’ve suddenly got on my hand. I can spend a lot of time with my boyfriend- which is nice because he works shifts and the flexibility makes it easier to spend some time together, I can relax and recharge after a very stressful semester and I have enough time and energy to do the things I love.

5. My dogs. The big one just snuck up on me and put his head on my knee. I know he’s probably just hungry, but I like to pretend he does that because he loves me. ^^

If I only had the patience and the talent, I would really love to build something in the style of all the old mining housing areas in my city and the surrounding towns. (Something like that). There is one housing area in particular that is really beautiful, built as a “gift” from the cities’ steel tycoon to his wife, a ‘garden town’, meant to be a refuge for the factory workers to come home and enjoy their time off (in reality, it was used to commit the workers to the factory- as long as you kept your nose out of trouble and unions, you would have a place to stay and even a supermarket where you got food cheaper than anywhere else, but as soon as you caused trouble or quit, off to the streets with you.).

Reply and hair solutions

didilysims said: Or you could pull them all out to another folder and put back those you know you want to keep, adding others as needed or missed.

Uhhh! That’s another very good option. So far, I’ve mercilessly deleted hairstyles, even the ones that looked just too similar to each other, compared my list to Keonis’ default replacements (I may actually keep those) and moved hair that doubled with that into my “SortedOut” folder, and FINALLY got rid of almost all redundant V1 hairstyles. And my Hair folder is now down from almost 3 GB to…. *drumroll* 900mb including defaults. (Yes, I was really desperate to get rid of all that unused hair. I only use like the same 25-40 over and over again…). I have three V1 hairstyles left, because I like them that much and just couldn’t find a V2 replacement (one’s the “Sandy” hair, the other two are a Nouk Girl Next Door Alpha Edit and Nouk’s Long Braid- we need more Nouk love, methinks).

The internet died! And then it came back again after I completely reset everything. This is getting ridiculous…

(Naming traditions in 15/16th c Germany)

eulaliasims said: Oh, so neat! Those remind me a bit of some Puritan names, albeit less wordy. It’s interesting to see how names change in response to cultural shifts. And Ludgera is kind of absurd, but also sounds strangely charming for some reason?

Yes, they are similar in idea. It does sound kind of absurd, but I’ve heard worse (somewhat unrelated, but have you ever had “Jason” screamed at you in a heavy Southern German accent? Now THAT’S the stuff of nightmares (’Tschäisooon’)). It is still used, but very rarely. I believe it might be more popular as a religious name for nuns (the holy Liudger is pretty popular in my region).

To cull or not to cull. That is the question

davidmont said: I think so yes! LOL that’d be easier but not. You might feel better cleaning. Because if you don’t do it and start over then you might download one of these again. And at the end you’d not do anything.

holleyberry said: I agree you should delete these instead of starting over.

I’m still torn. I deleted roughly 320 hairstyles from my folder, which brings it down to 240 (yes, I’m THAT determined). But on the other hand, there’s currently a completely NEW folder sitting on my hard drive in which I downloaded only the “essentials”, replaced all my leftover V1 Poppet hairstyles with V2 ones and, in the process, threw keoni-chans default replacements into the mix in order to a) fill in the gaps (missing V2 versions, hairstyles I couldn’t find) and b) to bring down the size of my folder (I’m not sure how I feel about that, as I actually like to use the Maxis hairs at times (for example, to emphasise the makeovers as I did in Strangetown)). Sigh, this is a hard decision.

I spent 2 hours in front of the PC before I screamed “Screw it!” about halfway to the male hair section (about ¼ of the female hair section) and closed the game… so, yeah. I’m close to insanity.

Anyway, I think I’ll spend the evening (well night), combing through my “Old Hair” folder and replacing all the V1 hairstyles with V2 ones. That’s probably a compromise I’d be able to live with.

eulaliasims said: The ‘influence to’ action is pretty awesome. Think ‘influence to…/appreciate’ will end up with an admire action? Nope, backrubs! Always! It’s like the game picks the most dramatic option.

Oh dear! I really need to use it more often!

eulaliasims said: I feel you on the shitty internet, mine goes out multiple times a day (including while I was writing this comment). I would love to hear about 16th c. naming traditions! Historical naming conventions are interesting. 😀 And ‘The Monsters of Templeton’ looks like an awesome book. I’m gonna go get it from my library tomorrow.

To make it short: Following the Lutheran Reformation, names like Hans and Gretel, the typical German names (which weren’t German at all, but Hebraic or Latin and only became German names during the medieval ages), became less popular as they didn’t fit the zeitgeist (Pietism) anymore. So they named their children “Fürchtegott” (”Fear God”), “Traugott” (”Trust in God”), “Leberecht” (”Live right”), “Thurecht” (”Do right”), which have mostly disappeared, but also “Dorothea”, “Theodor” or “Timotheus” which are still present (”Theodor” is actually becoming popular again in Germany). Most prominent example: Wolfgang “Amadeus” Mozart (Although his real name was “Theophilos”, but he also called himself “Gottlieb” for good measure. But hey, that’s an artist to ya!). Before Pietism, they were really big on names from the Greek mythology or Roman history. A little while after they started ‘adapting’ male names into female ones. That’s where we got names such as “Louise”, “Paula” or “Josephine”, but also names like “Ludgera” (from the German name “Ludger”) which sound a bit absurd. It’s funny how names you think that sound native to your language/ country are really just adaptations/ translations from another language.

Oh, hope you’ll enjoy it! I actually once recommended it to a friend and she absolutely hated it!

eulaliasims said: Loveable dork villains are the best kind! ;D

I love Jodie Larson as a villain/ dork and I’m not afraid to admit it! I mean, even their family bio suggests she made her money in dubious ways!

10 questions

I got tagged by eulaliasims. Thanks!

1. If you like to decorate in the Sims, what’s your favorite type of room to do? If you don’t, how do you handle decorating instead? Bare minimum? Downloading furnished lots?

Oh god, I’m terrible at decorating. I mean, I can make it look tolerable, but I’ll never be the queen of clutter or sth like that. So yeah, I’m always happy when I find decorated/partially furnished (I’m very particular about the amount of CC in my game- I prefer maxis-addons to everything else) lots, so I have at least some guidelines on what to do. I think I got better over the last few month- thanks to the quartertile cheat (how could I play this game for so long without knowing about it!).

2. Do you like to listen to anything like music or podcasts when you play?

I usually have my television running in the background. German TV offers plenty of trash to listen to while simming.

3. What made you choose your first expansion pack for the game (or games, if you play more than one iteration of the Sims)?

Ehm… I ‘borrowed’ the base game from a friend- long story- and had to get one expansion pack so I could play the game on my PC (she understandably wanted it back at some point). I think I chose Nightlife because… vampires? Downtown? It was probably the only expansion pack available at the department store. I loved it and played the game for 1 year on our old crappy family PC with just the base game plus Nightlife installed. Couple that with the fact that I didn’t know about CC back then and I’m pretty sure I’ve seen enough NL clothes for a lifetime.

4.  What’s your favorite kind of weather?

Cloudy (but not so cloudy that you can’t see the sky) with lots of indirect sunlight and a light breeze. Around 22°C/71°F.

5. What’s the first ever music album you remember buying?

That I personally bought or that someone got for me? A ‘Tokio Hotel’ cd (2005) if you meant the latter (they were really popular back then and my cool American friend was a huge fan, thereby little primary school me was, too), and if you mean the first album I ever bought,.. um, ITunes says that it was ‘The Lion King- Original Broadway Cast’ in 2013 (holy shit!). I’m more of a single person (that would be some Black Eyed Peas song back when I got my first IPod in 2009).

6. Do you prefer default townies, custom townies, or no townies at all? (Or maybe default and custom?)

Depends. If I were to play a pre-made neighbourhood, I’d prefer the townies shipped with it (or the flattened version- only the relevant ones). If I play a small self-made hood, no townies at all, and if I feel funny, I’ll just play the townies XD.

7. Why is your favorite book your favorite?

Uff… I’d call this one my all time favorite book. It’s got everything: A ‘murder mystery’, a huge family secret (I’m a sucker for that), family trees (!), a charismatic protagonist and just the right amount of fantasy. Runner up: that one, for nostalgia and the ‘lore’.

8. What’s the latest song/jingle to get stuck in your head?

‘Halleluja’ in its various iterations. My father got a karaoke app and sent his recording to me… thankfully, I’ve got the Cohen version stuck in my head. Also, ‘Hellfire’ from the ‘Hunchback of Notre Dame’. One of the most underrated villain songs. They are currently battling each other in my head, trying to get the upper hand.

9. What object (CC or not) do you use the most in your game?

Hm… that’s a tough one. You know what? It’s that lamp. That f*cking lamp. You know which one. That one that’s just… a lamp. Probably shipped with the basegame. Not fancy, not kitschy, cheap enough to staff every room with it. It’s probably that one.

10. How do you pick names for your sims?

I’m a name freak (go on, ask my about 16. century naming traditions in Northern Germany!), so, most of the time I already have a name stuck in my head when the Sim has his/her baby. Other times, I make one up on the spot. In certain situations (when I want a theme, or it is a premade family, or there are already a lot of siblings and I run out of ideas) I’ll use a name generator (they are pretty nifty. There are some that let you type in the siblings’ names and give you matching ones! It’s heaven to me!).

Thank you again, I had a blast. Since my internet connection crashed three times while I answered this (I’m literally living in a metropolis, why is my internet so shitty?!), I won’t tag anyone and won’t think up new questions (sorry). So it’s kind of open-house: if you feel like doing this “10 questions tag”, do it, just use eulaliasims’ questions or other ones you saw on the internet! Have fun!

Let’s hope I’ll be able to post this!

Reply time!

didilysims said: DV is hard to get into! There isn’t much drama to grab you, and hoo boy is the architecture something else… Natasha and John are definitely the outstanding characters, but everyone else is a bit too…happy. 😛 You definitely have to create your own drama with that ‘hood.

didilysims said: Also, to add to the recommendations list, inferi-sims.tumblr.com was another one who posted great makeovers and such of DV. Sadly Photobucket has killed all the pictures on her LJ, but there are still a lot on tumblr. (And thanks for the nostalgia-triggering mention. c: )

Oh yes, that’s true. I think when you’re thinking about Desiderata Valley, you first think of Natasha and John before anyone else. They are just unique. How could I forget inferi-sims! They were part of the reason I got a tumblr (so I could follow all the storytellers!)!

holleyberry said: I also miss @gonewodwo 😦

Yes! Her story was so great and pretty unique! (I love that word today.)

didilysims said: Pescado’s abortbedmaking fixes that. There’s also this one:modthesims.info/d/50351… (because I couldn’t find the MATY link. 😛 )

Ah, thank you! I always thought I had a mod that curbed that behaviour, but… apparently not?

didilysims said: If this is what I think it is, I’m stoked!

didilysims said: Ookay, no apocalypse…this time. >.>

Nope! Not… yet. I just needed a reason to close down all the businesses. And that was the first thing I could think of.

didilysims said: Looks good! Very museum-y.

Thank you! I was pretty proud of how it turned out. Could put my “How to make a good museum showcase” knowledge from my two-week internship at a museum in high school to good use.

didilysims said: Do they still swoon when he and his dreamy face start picking fights with them? Joe Carr has always been the biggest jerk in my experience. (But also a fine looking jerk…)

Fun fact! Joe has never started a fight in my game (on his own… you’ll see.). Middleground’s resident asshole is Komei. He has beaten up/shoved a bunch of Sims.

the1975sim said: On the edge of my seat to find out what his reaction will be!

Well, sorry to disappoint you(?) XD

alienpod said: .____.

Me too. It was basically a 50/50 chance whether he’d say yes or no. I kind of hoped for ‘yes’ because happy family life, but alas. More drama, I guess?
